Top 3 Weird National Holidays!!

To celebrate this long weekend in Quebec, I thought I would give you a brief Top 3 of Weird National holidays from around the world:

#3 Day of the Sea in Bolivia

While it is fairly common for countries to remember an important military event through the commemoration of a national holiday, few battles are remembered in such a strange way as the Bolivian loss of the Port of Calama to Chilean forces.

On March 23, the land-locked country remembers the loss of its last ocean-front property by marching in parades (as seen above) and solemnly listening to recordings of sea gulls and ship’s horns !!

Great excuse for a holiday – the loss of a port in a land locked country!! Good times.

#2 Melon Day in Turkmenistan (no idea where that is!)

Best way to celebrate the creation of a popular crossbreed of muskmelons – yes, a holiday, every August 12. The president of the country has even reflected how important the holiday is to his people, noting that “since ancient times Turkmenistan has been considered the homeland of the best melons in the world.”

Err…if you say so, Mr President!

#1 Korean Aphabet Holidays (Yes, there are more than one!)

Nothing says a day off work like a set of letters or symbols in a fixed order, used to represent the basic sounds of a language - the alphabet !

On October 9, the South Koreans celebrate Hangul Day and on January 15, the South Koreans observe Chosen gul Day, but both holidays are intended to celebrate the creation of the Korean Alphabet.

Happy long weekend, my Quebec friends!

Google awarded patents for Project Glass

Google was awarded patents on its ‘Project Glass Browser Glasses’ on Tuesday, patents that they had filed last October.

The design is currently in use by certain Google employees and allows the wearers to :

‘stream information to the lenses and send and receive messages through voice commands. There is also a built-in camera to record video and take pictures.’

They should have used the brand name ‘Google Goggles‘ for these, not their mobile app !

Imagine stores being able to target local messaging directly to people’s ‘Google Goggles’ when they are passing by – Now Google really is a company with vision……….20/20 vision!

Who’s better: Jackson Pollock or Paul Cadden?

Art is subjective….totally….1000% subjective.

And this is why.

The famous american artist, Jackson Pollock created an abstract piece of art that was sold in 2006 by founder of Geffen records and cofounder of Dreamworks, David Geffen, for $140 million in a private sale.

And this is it:

Looks like the floor of my local barbers actually.

And this is an image created by 47 year old relatively unknown Scottish artist, Paul Cadden :

The image directly above of a bearded man with a wet face is not in fact a photo but a pencil drawing that took approximately 6 weeks to complete. Mr Cadden sells his pieces for $5 000 each.

Here below is another example of his incredible talent using graphite, not a camera :

Mr Cadden, hats off to you for your extraordinary, understated talent.

Mr Pollock, I’ll get my brush to sweep up the hair on the floor !!

21 year old has an i-mplant !!

Got to take your hat off to 21 year old Dave Hurban from New Jersey, USA who has surgically implanted 4 magnets into his wrist to enable him to wear his ipod nano at all times.

It ends up being like a strapless watch. Of course it does, Dave !!

But isn’t an iPod nano almost out of date from a technological perspective…..should he not have maybe implanted the latest ipad to his chest !!!

I guess it should be called an i-mplant !
